Boutique Hotel 't Klooster
We loved 't Klooster for the kind of history most hotels can only gesture at:...
Wynwood Boutique Hotel occupies a renovated historic building at Nieuwestraat 4, close enough to the Historic Area of Willemstad to reach it on foot in about a minute, yet set back one street from the district's busiest stretch of bars and restaurants. The building keeps its age in its layout — no lift, upper floors by stairs only — the same trade-off that runs through most of Pietermaai's converted townhouses, and in return the hotel gets a street quiet enough to actually sleep on. It is a small property making the most of a location most hotels in the district would pay a premium for.
We selected Wynwood for the way a small hotel can still cover a wide range: a 20-square-metre Standard Room at one end, a 100-square-metre two-bedroom Family Apartment with its own kitchen at the other, and oceanfront options including a Superior Double and a Junior Suite in between. Every category carries the same basics done properly — soundproofing, premium bedding, a minibar, a coffee maker and rainfall showers — rather than reserving them for the top rooms only. Guests consistently single out the staff, which across multiple review platforms is the one point of near-unanimous agreement, and the kind of detail that is harder to fake than a fresh coat of paint.
Nieuwestraat sits close enough to the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, the Curaçao Maritime Museum and the Handelskade waterfront to reach any of them in under ten minutes on foot, while staying one street removed from Pietermaai's loudest nightlife. A handful of well-regarded addresses — James, Taqueria Maya, Mi Familia, Van Gogh Specialty Coffee — sit within a few minutes' walk, enough for a week of dinners without needing a taxi, and enough variety that no two nights have to look the same.
Prix: €€
Vibe: quiet, historic, individually furnished
Chambres: 5 rooms and suites, from a 20 sqm Standard Room to a 100 sqm two-bedroom Family Apartment
Best For: travellers who want the old town on foot and a quiet street to come home to
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the soundproofing and rainfall showers running through every room category, not just the top ones
Dining: no restaurant on site; a short walk to James, Taqueria Maya, Mi Familia and Van Gogh Specialty Coffee
Amenities: outdoor pool, private beach with lounge chairs, garden, terrace, free WiFi
Attractions: Historic Area of Willemstad (1-minute walk), Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, Curaçao Maritime Museum, Handelskade (all under 10 minutes on foot)
The hotel's private beach is the honest kind rather than the brochure kind: rocky, set with lounge chairs, better suited to snorkelling nearby than a long swim, and the small pool fills the gap for guests who just want to cool off without a trip across town. A garden and terrace round out the outdoor space, modest by resort standards but in keeping with a hotel built around its address rather than its grounds, and better suited to a slow morning coffee than a pool day.
Rooms are individually furnished rather than uniform, which is part of the appeal but means it is worth checking photos of the specific category booked — one or two of the smaller rooms have limited natural light. There is no lift, so an upper-floor room means stairs with luggage, and no restaurant on site, so dinner always means stepping out, which in this location is less an inconvenience than an invitation given how many good addresses sit within easy reach.
